About us. We convert printed pictures and photos to a digital format, and transfer them to CD or DVD (depending on the number and resolution of photos scanned). We are a professional photo scanning service serving the entire US with the convenient option for local drop-off and pick up for our customers in both the metropolitan Madison, WI and metropolitan Chicago, IL areas. We like to think that we help breathe new life into old, perhaps forgotten, photos. We know printed photos fade and discolor with time, which is why we take great pride in helping our customers preserve their photographed memories for future generations to enjoy.

Defining high-quality photo scanning

Color Accuracy.

The spectrum of colors in one printed photo as compared to another vary dramatically and depend on the camera used to take the picture, the age of the photo, the film developing process, and the brand and type of paper it is printed on (i.e. Polaroid, Kodak, glossy, matte, etc.). While software can be used to apply innumerable color filters to a digital image, efforts to maintain the color of a printed photograph in the scanned copy, in lieu of digitally correcting it, are preferred because the resulting image aligns with our nostalgic memory of the people and events captured in the picture.
We use software selectively to make purposeful changes and adjustments
to an individual scanned copy of a photo on an as-needed basis,
and do not use any automated batch software processing.

Selective Cropping. Some printed photos have distinctive borders. The Polaroid photo, for example, has a universally recognized white border–equal on the top and right and left sides, with a wider border on the bottom. Other types of photos have yet other distinguishing characteristics or markings–all of which contribute to giving special meaning or context for the subject pictured in the photograph. When scanning your photos, we thoughtfully
preserve a printed photograph’s native border.

Scanning photos that are not perfectly square or rectangular will necessarily introduce border artifact because a digital picture file always has square corners. This happens when scanning older photos or photos that are cut-out by hand. Upgrade and we will crop any non-square or non-rectangular photos giving all of your photos sharp-crisp edges with special attention to preserving the integrity of the main subject. To the extent possible, we still preferentially preserve the inherent border of your original photo, as described above.

Artifact Reduction. Any software processing, whether manual or automated, always carries some chance of introducing unintended artifact into a digital image (i.e. areas that will appear digitally enhanced to the naked eye). We use software selectively and only as needed to ensure the accuracy of the scanned image to the original photograph.

Borders and Photo Edges–not all are created equal.

When scanning your photos, we thoughtfully preserve a printed photograph’s native border.

Many older photos, or photos that are cut by hand, are not perfectly square or rectangular, or may not have straight edges. Digital image files are inherently square or rectangular. A digital image of a circle, for example (as shown on the right), is in reality a white square with a circle that fits snuggly within the square’s borders. Another way to think about this is fitting a round peg in a square hole – the peg will fit, but there will be a lot of empty space between the edge of the round peg and the borders of the square hole. Any peg that is not perfectly square will also have empty space between the edge of the peg and the square hole. Similarly, scanning photos that are not perfectly square or rectangular, or that do not have straight edges, creates unwanted artifact along the borders of the photo to fill that empty space. This happens when scanning many older photos or photos that are cut-out by hand. Our Premium Scanning Package includes selective and thoughtful cropping to give your photos sharp, clean borders.
